‘Tis The Season

Well here we are again at the back end of another year and bursting into a new year ahead. I wish I could say 2021 was a great year….but I can’t of course.

It was another emotional and economic roller coaster for both myself and everyone in my industry. The constant chopping and changing of regulations by the various state government bureaucrats was sooo frustrating. I seriously have to wonder whether they live in or interact with people who “get things done” in the real world?!!😳 Making unworkable rules seems to be their forte’ so I guess not.

So many of their mandates were simply unworkable and they aren’t learning from their mistakes. The absolute shit show of contradictory and unachievable testing requirements that have been introduced in the last week of 2021 are testament to their dogged determination to adhere to the best Pythonesque insanity. If only it were a comedy.

Plenty of people are looking forward to 2022 being a better year.

Fair enough.

However I am not being sucked into that trap again! I am expecting 2022 to be a shit show, just not quite the same kind as last year. Yes, a new and improved shit show!

Now that we are all pretty well vaccinated the actual deaths from Covid are ridiculously low (apologies to those who may have died of Covid in the last few weeks) and we (read the MEDIA) need to stop banging on about case numbers. They are going to scare the politicians into some knee jerk reactions which will no doubt play havoc with hundreds of thousands of Aussie’s lives again - to no real advantage.

Anyway, enough of the bad, let’s get on with the good because there has actually been some good.

Will and I got to shoot down to central New South Wales to visit my Dad the week before Xmas, who we hadn’t seen since May. He hasn’t been getting out much so we dragged him around a bit. The first stop being the local rifle range where most of the shooters are blokes he worked with/alongside over the last 60 years.

Will had a shot in the local comp and didn’t do too bad, but not quite as well as he did last May.

We took a few bikes along as well. I got out for a couple of rides and there was still plenty of water around from the November floods.

It is handy with Will having his licence now as he could drive out to meet me so he could ride too.

There was a bit of mud around but it just added to the fun! I really need to get myself a dirt bike so I can join him, so he can ride a more capable bike and so that he doesn’t kill the little TTR.

More early rides around town highlighted the best bits of country life.

Getting home from Dad’s I picked up the Tuono from the suspension shop on Xmas eve (my Xmas present!) I had it set up for my weight as well as a shock rebuild/respring. Joe from Ride Dynamics seems to know his stuff. He replaced some bushes in the fork legs as well, with them being a bit worn after 46 000km of use. This would explain the slight pulsating feeling from the front end of the bike under brakes. I thought it was the brake rotors but after the short ride home from the shop it may well have been the fork bushes.

The shock bump stop was also split so that was replaced as well.

I haven’t had a chance to take it for a decent ride yet but I know it WILL be better.
The best thing anyone can do with a new (yes, even a NEW new bike) is to get the suspension set up for their weight and riding style. The price wasn’t too bad either - much less than originally quoted.

Hopefully it will stop raining soon so I can go for a ride to test it out. 😉

Looking further back into 2021 and the good that springs to mind are several camping trips away on my Africa Twin. The big twin hits the spot for me in that I get the same buzz from exploring roads less travelled that I get when I load up the mountain bike and head off the beaten track.

But I can cover so much more ground. Initially I thought I might just bring it home and sell it because I got it for such a great price but after living with it for a while and with how well set up it is with ALL of the accessories I could ever need, it is a keeper. Yep, the big twin has certainly grown on me.

Steve roped me into the Great Cycle Challenge again in 2021. I wasn’t planning on doing it but he was keen and we gave each other some moral support. We got the distance done and raised about $2500 between us for kids cancer research.

It actually gave me a bit of a kick up the arse to get pedalling more as 2021 to that point had been a pretty uninspiring on the bicycle. That said I still pedalled 154 days of the year with about 4400km covered.

It just felt like I didn’t achieve anything. My only attempt at a challenge was the BVRT E2E x 2 and I bailed out on that, cutting about 38km off the 322km distance due to lack of motivation.

The 2021 stats from Strava.

Work picked up a bit but was still sporadic and by going to work we were subjected to all of the different state’s takes on quarrantine (see my opening rant 🤬) so there was NO joy to be had from a job that I normally love doing. Everyone I flew with seemed to be of the same mindset. Just tolerating the bullshit and hoping the dollars would appear in the bank account. Word is that several international carriers are seeing pilots quit in droves - with no jobs to go to - because they are quarantining for months on end. Something has got to give!

Anyway, I hope everyone has a better year in 2022.
I’d love to say that it will be better but I highly doubt it. I am pretty much just going to bunker down, ride my push bikes around the local area, do the odd moto ride and try not to spend any money unnecessarily.

Roll on 2022……DO YOUR WORST !!

Struggling

I am now 12 days into my Great Cycle Challenge....er challenge and I have been really struggling for motivation to do my nominated kilometres. 1000km isn’t anything to sneeze at but by the same token, I knocked out 1600km last October, rather effortlessly, for this same great cause. (Well, maybe it wasn’t effortlessly but I can’t remember it being this hard).

Redland Bay

I am coming off the back of a vicious bout of man flu and I am trying to grab easy kilometres by riding my road bike. This might explain why I am lacking some motivation but worryingly, I just haven’t felt like riding my bike. Yesterday I faffed around most of the day until it rained (which I knew was coming) and then told myself “well, you can’t ride now”, letting myself off the hook but putting myself a further 33km behind schedule.

Today sees me needing 396km in the bag but I am languishing on 279km.
Pardon my French but - Fuck!

What is wrong with me? I’m just not enjoying this like I normally would. I really hate saying I will do something and not following through. But following that line of thinking is making it feel like work, not pleasure.

Options when on the road.....

I am off at work again today. Up at 3am, at least it was an easy day (a mere 8 hours for a change) and I decided to just go “meh” on the Great Cycle Challenge. If I manage the kilometres good-o, but if I don’t? Well, tough titties. I will continue to ride as much as I can but if I have to use a gym bike to keep my training on track and my motivation up, so be it. If you would like to help pump up my motivation feel free to donate a little here.

 Training?
Maybe I didn’t mention a little ride I have my eyes on in late November..........
Time for an uppercut!

 Cheers.

Pedalling For A Great Cause

Hey-ho regular readers. It is October again and that can only mean one thing.
The Great Cycle Challenge.

I have nominated to ride 1000km again this October to help raise funds to find a cure for kids cancer. That means I ride 33km per day, every day for the month of October.

Not my usual bag, but its for a great cause.

Great! You say, thats easy, right? Well, I have had a dose of the deadly man-flu these last 12 days and have been laid up as a result. Don't panic, all indications are that I am pulling through but it was a close scrape!

How does that effect my 1000km target? Well, it means I missed kicking off Day I with a decent ride. This time last year I was 205km along the way to the 1000km. Here we are at Day II and my total is a measley 37km. I am already behind the 8 ball.

I will do my best to get back on track ASAP. If anyone feels like chipping in to sponsor me that would be greatly appreciated and remember, it is tax deductible for us Aussies.

Alternately, I challenge you folks out there in Bloggerland to ride 33km once a week, all in one hit, each week for the month of October.
Yup, you can either donate (please) or you can reap the benefit of feeling what 33km feels like, only you don't have to do it day after day. Just 4 times for the month will suffice.

You never know. You might just like it........so dig those pushys out!

Cheers.

Bloody (Beautiful) Rain

Well the riding has been seriously slowed due to incessant rain. It has rained for 5 straight days now with showers still on the forecast!

Green where it was brown 1 week ago

This hasn't stopped me completely but where I was on track to hit my 1000km goal on perhaps Monday, here I am on Thursday still stuck on 880km. This is partly due to the fact that spare parts finally turned up for my broken Habit and it suddenly became a mad rush to get myself organised for a mtb trip to Tasmania. A trip that I honestly didn't think I would be going on due to a busted bike.

But here I am, sitting in Launceston, waiting for the other 4 guys to arrive on their Jet* flight. We will then head for the newly hallowed mtbing lands around Derby in Northeast Tassie. Here I hope to crank up the kilometres as best as I can. Dirt is much harder to rack the k's up on but at least I will be earning those donations!
Anyway, here's hoping my next post will be from Derby!(subject to standby travel....)

Cheers

Great Cycle Challenge - The Rest Of The First Week

WEEK 1

Ok, just a quick bulk update from the first week of my Great Cycle Challenge.

Everyone should be up to speed with Day 1 as per my previous post.

Day 2

was a gentle recovery ride which found me trying to find the flattest possible route because I didn't want to climb any hills after Day 1!

203km on Day 1, no flats. About 5 minutes after the above photo was taken,
10.5km into Day 2, pffffttt-flat! Maaannn!!

The rest of Day 2 was a bit wet and very gentle.

Day 3

was a day to cover some kilometres as I was about to head off to work for four days, with almost no opportunity to ride. I managed to bang out 65km (40mi) which is two days worth of riding. Not bad as I was still feeling Day 1's effects.

Chillertek rang for a chat about 15 seconds after I took the above photo so I had a nice chat to him while pedalling along the waterfront!

To cap Day 3 off, I added a new steed to my stable! Woo Hoo!!
Yup, going fat-ish with 3.0 rubber and staying with the Lefty. That makes two Leftys in my stable now, which reminds me that I must update my "My Rides" page as it has changed significantly in the last few months.

Day 4

Day 4 was a "rest" day mostly spent in Sydney with a little work tacked on from mid afternoon.

Day 5

I actually managed to find a cheap flat bar hybrid bike that I was able to pedal south along the Gold Coast on a crackingly stunning Spring day. Not too hot but warm enough to see plenty of beach goers out enjoying themselves.

I managed 52km which is almost two days worth of riding. Not bad for time away from home.

Day 6

was a full day at work with no prospect of any pedalling. This was fine as I need to be a bit careful and give myself some rest days. I don't want to end up overtrained and sick or worse still, unmotivated!

Day 7

was an early start for a ride with the kids and a good mate and his keen young fella. I got a first ride on the new Cannondale and spent the ride quietly noting things that would need adjusting/changing. I must say, this is a normal process with any new bike I buy and overall I was pleased with how the 3 inch tyres felt and handled. I will give some more thoughts on the "Beast" once I get it more sorted. Another 30km in the bank today.

Week 2

Day 1 of Week 2 started out early again, this time with a gravel grinding loop around the south eastern area of Brisbane's bushlands, which are quite substantial. I was accompanied by a couple of mates who were keen to check out some of the trails they hadn't seen before.

We didn't get far (like 500m) before we had our first puncture of the day. Cyclocross tyres and rocks can be a hazardous combination as Josh found out. His only spare tube used already with another 64-ish kilometres to go......

The ride threw up a little of everything from the singletrack above, to open fire trail below...

To hike-a-bike route finding......

Unfortunatley, it seemed to be a day that orange bikes suffered from rapidly deflating tyres with our second flat (well, sort of flat. The Stan's sealed the hole but it just needed topping up with air) of the day at about the 36km mark. Thankfully, that was the last for the day with my 60psi Sammy Slicks going on to record zero punctures despite copping a caning at times.

That sees me sitting on 444.5km(276mi) on Day 8 of the challenge. I might go close to knocking out a kilometre-for-dollar ratio of 1 at this rate......that is unless the dollars begin to flow in again.......

Thanks for checking in.
Cheers.

A Month Of Pedalling Beckons

Hi folks.
As usual, my posting rate is dismally low. In my defence it is not due to lack of stuff going on but lack of time to share it. As evidence, some pics from the last few months....

However, I can give you a view into the future with my plan for October. It has been 4 years since I last signed up but I decided it was time to add some purpose and challenge to my cycling again. Yes dear reader, I have added my name to the list of riders in the Great Cycle Challenge. The aim of the challenge is to gain sponsorship to raise money for research into finding a cure for kids cancer. Which cancer? Well, all of them because they all suck!

I have nominated to ride 1000 kilometres in October, as I did in 2013. That is 32km(18mi) each and every day of the month. I know it can be done but riding 1000km is never an easy task so I hope I am up to the challenge this time around.

I plan on getting off on the right foot (or pedal) from the get-go. I have been roped into riding in the Blacksheep Man Ride tomorrow. The Man Ride has it's own honorable cause so I will be a double cause and hopefully a double century rider by tomorrow evening.

Roadside nutrition...

If anyone can spare a few dollars (fully tax deductible for us Aussie tax mules....er..payers)  then please head over to my Great Cycle Challenge page.

I will be trying to keep the blogger ball rolling for the month so that I can keep everyone up to date with my progress, so keep checkin' in.

Thanks in advance.
