The Cold Snap ADV RIDE

I minted the draft for this post waaay back on the 5th of June after Steve and I had gone on an impromptu adv ride at the very end of May. The inspiration came from the unfortunate attendance of a funeral for a much loved work colleague who only a few weeks earlier had complained of extremely sore legs. An investigation revealed advanced pancreatic cancer and Marty was gone a mere two weeks later.

Fcuk.

You just don't know how much time you have left on this free floating zoo so these reminders come along every now and again. As long as it isn't oneself being the reminder, then we are able to do something about it. That "something" was a call to my brother to twist his arm into coming along with me the following weekend for an adv ride. It didn't take much twisting to be honest.

It was going to be bitterly cold but the weather looked clear. Cold and clear? We could do that - even if we were going to be camping.

Steve scrambled around and bought a quality sleep mat and with the rest of his basic stuff was good to go.

I rode down the Pacific Highway to Coopernook on the Friday and was several beers deep with a local KTM 1190 rider by the time Steve arrived.

I'll let him take up the story from here as he has produced two excellent little YouTube videos of our weekend. Please enjoy....and thanks little Bro!

I'll throw a few photos from the ride here.(The really good ones are from Steve's real camera) It was a cracking late Autumn weekend up on the range.

Cheers.

  1. Nice last photo in the dark(not mine I might add). Was a good ride, I didn't bother putting a blog post together after putting in so many hours throwing those videos together. Warren was right, video takes forever, trying to make some sort of story out of it when you don't plan anything.

  2. Hey Dave, nice ride and top work on those videos Steve. I rarely watch YouTube bike ride vids for longer than a couple of minutes but enjoyed these in their entirety. New England Tablelands is probably my favourite part of Aus, especially in Autumn. Old Skippy likes the cooler climate too, seen some huge 6' buggers at Point Lookout and Thunderbolts lookout. You guys seem to be getting decent traction on the dirt, have to check what rubber you both are using when/if I get another bike.

    1. Hi Warren, yes Steve did a really good job with these two videos. As you can see, we aren't doing anything hard core. Our idea of adv riding is just getting off the beaten track into rarely seen countryside. Having a capable bike and matching rubber doesn't slow us down on the black top at all, it just increases the safety margin a lot while off road.
Also, check Steve's channel as he has a bunch of videos out now. The Flinders ones were his first so a bit raw as he was learning and we didn't film it intending to use the video.... so we might have to go back and do it again....on the way to an Adelaide MotoGP might work. 🤔😁
