Mapping Software Compatible For GPS Transfers

I found this great post on how to create routes and transfer them to your GPS unit on an Africa Twin forum. Having recently signed up for Gaia GPS online maps I was at a bit of a loss as to how to best use them. The subscription isn't cheap and I don't generally pay for any apps on my phone so I was very glad to find the following post from Matt On A Moto. Yes, it is a motorcycle blog but these mapping tips are just as applicable for mountain biking or bikepacking route planning.

I have copied and pasted it in here so that I have a permanent record of the detail. I am in no way claiming ownership of the material.

I would like to reiterate this is all the property of MATT ON A MOTO and you can find his original post by clicking on his blog name some 14 words back in this sentence.

I hope you find this of some help as I have.

Edit: I have deleted Matt's text as it simply would not format into the page on my blog. Please click on the link above to his blog for the full information.

Cheers.

MOTORCYCLE ROUTE PLANNING AND MAKING YOUR GPS AGREE

  1. Hey Dave, the cut and paste does not display properly in Bloggers text window, cuts off the text.

I know you already paid for GAIA but also have a look at Ride with GPS, I've been using it since around 2010, despite it looking like a bicycle focused route planner it is made two bikers and remains by far the best route planner for bikers and garmin users. I try every new route planner that comes out but nothing so far has half the features of RWGPS. Especially handy is having Google Street View instantly on all your route planning and having every route on your smartphone in the RWGPS app which also provides excellent turn by turn navigation if your garmin map fails as I encountered in Philippines and Thailand.

    1. Well, that is a bugger! I will have a play and see if I can make it fit. If not I might delete the lot.
As for the Ride with GPS, yep you might have seen I have used it for the mapping on the last 30 or so posts - plus the last 10 odd years of mtbing.

    2. Oh yeah, I thought I had seen you using it, sorry for sounding like a fanboy but the Google Street View for me is essential, but I'd love their app to look like the Garmin birdseye view instead of the Google maps view, then I could throw my Garmins in the bin.

  2. Seems rather complicated. How about an easy solution?

    1. Yep, if that is too hard for you then don’t leave the town limits.
